Elizabethan Head Peices

Practising Elizabethan Inspired Hairstyles

A lot of Elizabethan portraits show that the hairstyles involve a lot of decorations and jewels. This was to show how wealthy their backgrounds and families were. Portraits would be the main way to show a wide audience what you looked like and also what you wanted people to see you as. The Elizabethans were very good at packing their portraits full of symbolism.

The most popular jewel to wear in Elizabethan times was the pear. They were either worn on their own or on a string of pears. If pears were being worn by someone you would have known they were from a very wealthy background as they were an expensive piece of jewellery to wear. They also wore many different jewels such as diamond, ruby, emerald, opal, topaz, sapphire and many more.
The jewels weren’t just worn on clothing but also in the hair as well, they also decorated their hair with feathers.
They decorated their hair with many things including...

The Coif

The French Hood

The Atifet

The Caul

The Pillbox

My favourite one of these is the Caul because its bold and pattered which I really like but also settle and elegant at the same time. I like that its not too garish as well because some of the Elizabethan head pieces are very bold and dark which I think look slightly over the top and would be hard to make them look contemporary. I think I might try and practise a look inspired by the Caul headpiece.
